Beyond the Teaching Nursing Home
Employing an unoccupied and refurbished space at Joondanna, Bethanie has partnered with the University of Western Australia to establish a specialist aged care clinical learning resource. This valuable project’s aim is to help educate and train health professional students, including medicine and nursing students, through ‘hands-on’, practical and simulated exercises using participating volunteers.
Facilities available to students at the Bethanie Joondanna facility include:
• 12-bed ward for simulated clinical training activities (incorporating an observation room)
• Seminar and training room facilities
• Community home (simulated home environment) providing a specific learning environment to teach students how to attend to the health care needs of customers in community settings
• IT hub housing iPads for student use and access to electronic health records
Supported by the Aged Care Association Australia WA, the project is led by UWA Nursing at the School of Population Health (within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Services). Other partners include Central Institute of Technology and West Coast Institute of Training.
