Frequently asked questions
Q.How do you choose a Retirement Village?
When choosing a Retirement Village it is important to think about your ideal lifestyle. How it looks now and how you want to live it in the future.
It’s important to begin your research before choosing a Retirement Village.
Information is available everywhere. We suggest you read provider brochures and websites and watch their videos. A list of informative FAQs are also published on the Consumer Protection (WA) website.
Involve your family and friends in the conversation. It’s an important decision that should be well considered.
Q.So what is a Retirement Village?
A Retirement Village provides accommodation, lifestyle amenities and services to people over the age of 55 who are able to live independently. Whilst Bethanie Retirement Villages support ageing in place with access to a 24 hour monitored emergency call system in each villa or apartment, they are not designed for seniors who require continual care.
In Western Australia, Retirement Villages operate under the Retirement Villages Act which was introduced to provide peace of mind for seniors moving into a Retirement Village. The Act prescribes the information a Retirement Village provider, like Bethanie, must provide during the buying process, the fees that can be charged while living in the village and the minimum standards that need to be observed. All other forms of retirement living do not fall under the Act.
Q.How do you know retirement living is for you?
Moving into retirement living might be a great option when the family home is holding you back from your ideal lifestyle. A health scare has you worried about your personal safety and security. Or maybe you feel isolated from family, friends and the community in which you live.
A phrase we hear among Bethanie residents time and time again is “I wish we did this earlier.”
The earlier you consider your options for retirement living the more options you will have. Our residents often tell us they were glad they made the move whilst they were still healthy and active, and the decision was still theirs to make.
Retirement living allows you to downsize whilst living safely, independently and in the company of like-minded people. People who not only share similar interests but who will expose you to new experiences and opportunities.
You can free yourself from daily chores like home and garden maintenance and really take advantage of your newly discovered freedom. Embrace your inner social butterfly, rock the ‘lock and leave’ lifestyle or get lost in a good book.
It’s up to you. You can be as active, social or quiet as you like.
Whatever lifestyle you choose, you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing your new community of neighbours and friends are looking out for you.
Retirement Villages are just one example of retirement living.
