International Study Tour

In March, nine Bethanie team members took part in an International Study Tour to the Netherlands and Norway, visiting aged care organisations recognised internationally for their approach to dementia care, wellbeing, and everyday living.

The tour focused on how care can be delivered in ways that support dignity, independence and a normal daily life, for both residents and staff.

Across every site visited, a consistent approach stood out:

When people are supported to keep doing what they can, stay involved in everyday life and make choices about their day, their wellbeing improves, and so does the experience of staff.

A phrase that stayed with many of our team was:

“Hands behind your back, only do for someone what they truly can’t do for themselves.”

This idea isn’t about reducing care, but about doing care differently - encouraging walking where possible, inviting residents to help with simple tasks if they wish, supporting choice, and recognising that small, everyday moments can make a big difference.

One team member put it simply:

“It’s easy for care to become about ticking off tasks. But when we slow down and do things with people instead of for them, their whole day can change.”

In many ways, these learnings reinforce the great care already happening across Bethanie and what our teams already value: respect, compassion, connection, and purpose.

Over time, we’ll continue to explore how these insights can strengthen what we do across our homes and services. For now, the message is simple: the way we support independence, choice and everyday life matters deeply.
