When Bethanie Home Care client Jan attended a recent VisAbility meeting, one product immediately caught her attention: Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Jan, who has been legally blind since 2010 due to macular degeneration, wanted to give the glasses a try and explore how they can help her regain independence.Purchased using Jan’s Home Care funds, the Meta glasses can be worn indoors and used as sunglasses outdoors. They pair with her iPhone and hearing aids, allowing her to make and receive calls, send messages, take photos and adjust the volume using voice commands or a swipe on the frame.
For Jan, the biggest benefit is being able to do more for herself. The glasses can read printed material aloud, including documents and menus. On a recent restaurant visit, Jan was able to have the menu read to her rather than waiting for someone else to assist.
“The best thing is the independence it gives back to me.”
The hands-free assistant can also offer conversational support. One day when Jan was not feeling well, she told the AI tool, which suggested playing relaxing music. While resting on her bed, Jan asked the glasses what they could see. The response noted that Dolly, nearby, “looks comfortable”—a simple interaction that made the technology feel personal as well as practical.
Whether she is reading a menu, staying in touch with others, taking a photo or finding local information, the technology is helping Jan approach everyday tasks with greater confidence. Thanks to Jan’s Support at Home package, she has regained her independence, using innovative technology to stay connected, informed and engaged in the activities that matter most to her.
