The Bethanie Geneff Community Centre

Publish date: 17 August 2023

The residents of Bethanie Geneff Retirement Village have reason to celebrate as the long-awaited Bethanie Geneff Community Centre officially opened its doors on Friday, 11 August to a delighted crowd of 40 residents, staff, and local stakeholders. This purpose-built centre was a much-needed addition warmly welcomed by the residents who look forward to hosting a wide range of activities and events there.

The new community centre will serve as the heart of the village, the essential ingredient in maintaining the vibrant community spirit that defines this community. Residents have named the dedicated space ‘Cooinda Community Room’, a beautiful name derived from Noongar language meaning ‘Happy Place’.

Until now, the village residents shared a hall space at the adjacent aged care home, which was especially challenging during COVID restrictions. This room can now be the hub for various activities, including fitness groups, morning and afternoon teas, chaplain chats, craft groups, games, and general social gatherings.

The importance of this new facility cannot be overstated. It's not just a building; it's a space that nurtures social engagement, fosters friendships, and supports the overall well-being of the village residents. This initiative demonstrates Bethanie's commitment to the residents and social contribution as a mission-led organisation. By listening to residents’ needs and prioritising the development, Bethanie has created a space that enhances the sense of community within the village, and evidence the value placed on mission.

At the official opening event, Steve Thomas, the resident Committee Chairman, shared his excitement saying, “May this be the experience for every person who enters this building, a Happy Place, filled with fun, laughter, and joy."

City of Stirling Deputy Mayor, Stephanie Proud JP, also emphasised the significance of this community centre stating, “Bethanie plays an integral role in our local community providing a range of options for older Australians including this beautiful new purpose build community room.

“Older Australians provide priceless contributions towards our community and these contributions – large and small – continue to enrich the community that they are part of.”
