How to apply for Home Care

Navigating home care can feel confusing at first, but you don’t have to do it alone. Whether you need a little extra help at home or more ongoing support, there are government‑funded programs available to help you live safely and independently.

Before you can access Home Care services, you’ll need an assessment through My Aged Care. Below, we’ve outlined what to expect and how Bethanie can support you every step of the way.

How do I get an assessment?

To access either Support at Home or Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) services, you’ll need an assessment to determine which program is right for you.

Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or visit their website to discuss your care needs and arrange a home assessment.
After your assessment, you’ll receive a letter confirming what level of support or program you’ve been approved for.

  • If you’re approved for Support at Home , there may be a waiting period of a few months before your funding is assigned.
  • If you’re approved for Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) services, support can usually be arranged much more quickly.

Once your funding has been assigned, you’ll receive a letter from My Aged Care with a referral code .
This code allows you to access home care services with an approved provider like Bethanie.

When you have your referral code, call 131 151 to speak with Bethanie’s Aged Care Navigation Specialists.
Our team will talk through your options, help activate your services, and make sure the support you receive suits your needs and preferences.

What’s the difference between Support at Home and CHSP?

Both programs provide help at home, but they’re designed for different levels of need.

Support at Home Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)
For people with ongoing or more complex care needs For people who need entry‑level or short‑term support
Ongoing support based on assessed needs Basic help to maintain independence
Funding may take time to be assigned Usually quicker to access
Greater choice and flexibility in services Fewer services, typically one or two supports
May include personal care, nursing, allied health, domestic support and more May include help with cleaning, meals, transport or social support
