Bethanie Elanora's Hidden Secret

For over seven years there has been a silent angel helping the less fortunate in the south west. That modest and selfless woman is Lyn Ferguson from Bethanie Elanora. Lyn is the Village Manager at the aged care facility and has cleverly taken advantage of all opportunities to gather up goods people have finished with – and share them amongst a number of not-for-profit charitable organisations around the Bunbury region.

Lyn works with families and residents who move from the village into nursing homes, or families of those who have passed, to gather up their belongings and send them off to a better place to be re used and re loved, paying it all forward.

Just last week Lyn handed over a large collection of non-perishable food items to Vinnies, it included over 180 cans plus other bits and pieces and was gathered up in just one week. Showcasing the power of Lyn’s little movement as well as the empathetic nature of Bethanie Elanora Village residents, Lyn simply left a note in letterboxes asking for food donations when she heard a very unfortunate story about a local man who had lost his wife to cancer and was living in his car with his two children.

Bethanie Elanora Village Manager Lyn Ferguson said,

“It broke me when I heard his story from my contact in the Welfare office, so I put a note out and I couldn’t believe the response. If we continue to collect enough items, we will keep going with it and help even more locals who are in need.”

Over the last seven years Lyn has collected clothing for Vinnies, sheets, food and blankets for the local welfare office as well as furniture, kitchen goods, beds and fridges.

Bethanie, Western Australia’s most recognised not-for-profit aged care and retirement living provider is making social contributions a focus for 2018, driving activities which are not part of Bethanie’s core business, but contribute greatly to the wellbeing of the community.

Lyn adds,

“Vinnies were both excited and very grateful for our donations. As soon as we handed the goods over I had another half crate full of further donations. “We know they also need sheet and blankets, so we are collecting these too and will drop them off. It’s a lovely thing to be able to give back and help those in our community who are less fortunate. Our residents love being involved and being able to help.”

Bethanie is working with its staff and clients to engage in social contributions via three different areas - practical support, financial support and personnel support. Practical support involves supplying goods or services to individuals or groups, financial support involves fundraising and financial contributions to individuals and groups and personnel support includes volunteering or help given by staff.

“As one of WA’s largest not-for-profit aged care and retirement living providers, we have a responsibility to give back where we can. People like Lyn don’t ask for recognition, but we wanted to tell people who this special lady is and hopefully, it will result in more and more support for the worthy causes she collects and donates to.”
