World's greatest shave at Bethanie on the Park

Supporting the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave, Cathy Capuzzo in Hospitality Services at Bethanie on the Park took the plunge and shaved her hair off on Friday 20 March to help beat blood cancer.

Keeping it in the Bethanie family, a hairdresser on site at Bethanie on the Park undertook the job. Cathy’s hair was sitting on the middle of her back, so it was quite a chop!

This cause is close to Cathy’s heart, at a very young age she lost a primary school friend to leukaemia and it impacted her greatly. She has since lost many friends to cancer and her 2020 New Year’s resolution was to give and support a charity.

Cathy worked hard to raise as much funds as she could, reaching a final figure of $1146, just over her $1000 goal and said, “I felt privileged to have been able to allow the family members of people who are fighting these diseases to participate in cutting my hair. It was a very emotional time and to some it was very raw as it brought back memories to them of when their loved ones lost their hair and their lives.”

“All funds raised will give families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need, and it also funds vital research to help more people survive blood cancers, while improving their quality of life.

“Since doing the shave I have become aware of how important hair is, as people look at you differently when your hair is so short. I had the worst night sleep prior to my shave, as I knew it would take a long time for my hair to grow back to the length it was but it was my choice to have it done, and for people who are diagnosed with a disease they don't have that choice!”

Every day 35 Australians are diagnosed with a blood cancer. That's one Aussie every 41 minutes. Although research is improving survival, sadly an Australian loses their life to blood cancer every two hours.

Cathy adds, “I am very grateful to all the people who came to support me during the Shave. It is my mission to shave the world from blood cancer.”
