Bunty’s legacy comes full circle

Publish date: 31 July 2024

Barbara 'Bunty' Douglas passed away at Bethanie Beachside in July 2023, but her memory lives on through a wonderful fundraising initiative organised by her family.

As a career physiotherapist, Bunty spent many years working for Bethanie.  “She worked from 1988 at what was then known as the old Warwick Nursing Home,” said her daughter Nicola.

“She went to Beachside when it opened and together with an occupational therapist (OT), they established the therapy program there.”

Bunty developed dementia in her late 60s and was a resident at Bethanie Beachside for just one year before she passed away. Her family were so moved by the exemplary care she received there, and they were inspired to do something that would mark Bunty’s legacy and her lifelong love for Bethanie and its people.

“We understand that there is set funding for the necessary things for residents, but not always additional funding for the extra things,” Nicola said.

“So we initiated a GoFundMe campaign and invited people to donate in Bunty’s memory, with a focus on therapy and in particular dementia.”

The response was fantastic, and some $2,260 was raised.

“We spent time with Emily, an OT at Beachside, who prioritised creating relaxation zones within the two dementia wings; we bought sensory aquariums, projector lights, music players, books, reminiscence DVD’s, wall decals, and doll and pet therapy resources.”

Most poignantly, the inclusion of doll and pet therapy resources highlighted Bunty's belief in the healing power of empathy and companionship.

“Mum always loved Beachside,” said Nicola. “It’s a lovely site and was very comfortable for her to live in, but it is the people inside that make the difference.”

“The staff were all kind and patient and have the most beautiful natures in caring for the residents.”

“We are so happy to have been able to gift something special to the aged care home; Mum would be thrilled.”
