Understanding the ACAT Assessment

To access government-funded aged care services, such as home care support or a place in an aged care home, you’ll first need an ACAT assessment (Aged Care Assessment Team).

It's an important step in your aged care journey, and we're here to guide you through how it works and what to expect so you feel informed and support from the start.

Step 1: Register with My Aged Care

The first step is to register with My Aged Care , the national gateway for accessing government-funded aged care services. You can do this in one of two ways:

During registration, you’ll be asked a few questions about your health, daily routine, and current support needs. It usually takes around 15 minutes to register, so it's a good idea to set aside a little time. You might also find it helpful to have a family member or friend with you for support and help you remember important details.

Step 2: Book Your ACAT Assessment

Once you've registered, My Aged Care will arrange for you to be assessed by a member of the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). This is usually a qualified nurse, social worker, or other healthcare professional who will meet with you at your home or in hospital to understand your health, lifestyle, and support needs.

Their role is to determine the level of care you're eligible for and recommend services that can best support your wellbeing and independence.

It's a good idea to have a family member or trusted friend with you during the ACAT assessment. They can offer support and help you talk through your day-to-day needs.

What Happens After the Assessment?

After your ACAT assessment, you'll receive a formal letter of approval from My Aged Care. This letter will include:

  • The types of care you're eligible for (such as residential care, home care, or respite)

  • A personalised support plan based on your needs

  • Your unique referral code, which you'll need when applying for aged care homes

Once you've received your letter, you can begin exploring services that match your care and personal preferences. And remember - our Aged Care Navigation Specialists are here to help you understand your options and guide you through the next steps.
